pixar

Pixar started it's miraculous film making 25 years ago. As a (nearly) 20 year old I can safely say that these were the movies that i grew up with. I hope you enjoy this video as much as i did!

tamed thoughts.

I think I'll have now gone over the 2 day bump of blogging. I didn't think i could do it... but HA! proved you wrong!
Anyway, I've been getting more and more obsessed with all things country-esque. Thanks to some beautiful music to set me to today to I think I've can look at the day feeling all the more happy than i did at the start.

I saw this show on sbs about a photographer named Roberto Dutesco who went to a spit island off the coast of Nova Scotia where there was a ship wreck and these horses managed to survive on the island. Their hair is matted and dreaded and their hooves have grown gnarly and free in the soft sand. They are pure and beautiful creatures.

My 2 day hangover is gone and I'm back to my normal routine of uni dotted with work.

Here's some of the tunes i had flying around in the car on to way to uni today.

This commute is taking up too much of my thought space. Whatever i do next year, I will be doing it near to where i live. Sadly, it seems that it might be the city. But i shall keep my options open. Who knows... maybe the wild?

the 'not-so-sure-how-i-feel' drive home.

So i just got back from driving home from uni and I feel like sharing a little something. In amongst all the cars and the pollution and the on-again-off-again rain, i remembered some things.

This song is played at the end of the movie Lady in the Water which is a truly beautiful movie. Peculiar, but beautiful. I found myself sitting watching the credits roll up just mesmerised by the song. Today, whilst being cut off, tailgated and generally stressed from driving on the highway i spaced out. Not in the dangerous micro sleep way, but in the peaceful and happy way.

So, we have this song swimming around in my head calming me down and what should i remember but another beautiful and peaceful thing. Deadman is a film which you either love, or you hate. For me, it was love. Pure cinematic admiration. One scene in particular resonated with me. William Blake (played by Johnny Depp)is a run away fugitive from an altercation with a rogue cowboy. Blake is aided by a Native American who is also on the move.

The photo above is from a scene where Blake is sent floating down a river as a result of injury. The entire film is shot in black and white which gives an eerie vibe throughout the movie. This is further cemented by the equally creepy soundtrack provided by Neil Young. The simplicity of the scene stuck with me. No need for big Hollywood sweep shots or stirring violins; just wholesome cinema with unadulterated emotion.

It's a bizarre combination of both these things which overcame me this afternoon and I can't really explain why these things came to me. My mood in the earlier half of today had a very slow, black and white kind of feeling. This has dissipated now by returning home to a house full of family and the world feels normal again. Normal-ish.

reflections and refractions.

I saw these guys about the Sydney music scene early this year for the Sydney festival. I didn't get a chance to go see them. Mountain man are an American trio who create the most beautiful harmonies which transport me into a simple, happy place.

At the same time as i was listening to these guys last night, i was also flicking through the pages of the latest country style magazine. The combination of strikingly beautiful music with the beautiful pictures and stories of the magazine put me into a pure and happy place. Even though it wasn't this exact image, when i was flicking through the magazine I remembered a scene in the 2008 movie Australia. Even though it was a questionable film in terms of plot, acting etc, it was a visually beautiful film. One image which I feel summaries all of what's been happening right now is this one.

The main culprit for all of this country love at the moment has probably stemmed from the weather (autumn always makes me feel this way) as well as the incredibly beautiful setting of my cousin's wedding on the weekend. Set amongst the lush dairy pastures of the South Coast farmlands, the wedding was crisp, elegant and subtle. The quintessential image of the weekend was the bride and groom standing in the field with a glorious sunset falling into the country I'd so quickly fallen in love with. The weekend was never close to cliché (or is that because it's my family? I often wonder how are own families are perceived by the caterers and co.) and was a beautiful chance to catch up with some family members I'd not spoken to in quite some time.

But in any case, it was a beautiful weekend, (with the exception of my messy behaviour after god only knows how many beers) with the whole experience resulting in my wanting to move to the country and live the slow life to the beat of the likes of mountain man.

I saw these video a couple of weeks ago and they've stuck with me. There is something so unbelievably beautiful about the combination of Sigur Rós and the brilliant images captured from the BBC's Planet earth series.

step 1

I've started this blog after coming to the realisation that i spend way too much time browsing the Internet and seeing a plethora of amazing images, stories and generally attractive things. For my own benefit, as much as my love to share the things i see, I've decided to compile the best of what i see into (hopefully) a beautiful and thought provoking folio. I probably won't end up being religiously regular with the blog, but hopefully it'll be a case of quality not quantity.
